Comic-Con News: Glee Cast to Appear on The Simpsons

During a recent Simpsons panel discussion at Comic-Con, showrunner Al Jean announced that the cast of Glee will appear during an upcoming episode of the show. The exact cast members who’ll be involved - including cheer coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) - have not yet been announced.
The upcoming season of The Simpsons will feature a number of notables such as Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg and ‘60s icons Cheech and Chong.
Comic-Con visitors at the Simpsons session also viewed a preview of October’s “Treehouse of Horror” episode, which features killer board games.
The Simpsons is America’s longest-running sitcom and the country’s longest-running animated program. The historic 22nd season will air Sunday nights on FOX.

Comic Con International is literally just around the corner and no one’s got time for long-winded intros. Let’s get right to it:
Scott Pilgrim: Adam Sternbergh writes about Michael Cera, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and ties it all in to his fancrush on Alpha Flight. Yes, you read that right. It all takes place in The Walrus, the Canadian magazine of, oh yeah, you read that right, too. Canada has a magazine.
Captain Action: He’s not a “doll,” he’s an “action figure,” and he’s back in action courtesy of Beau Smith and Eduardo Baretto in the upcoming Captain Action Winter Special from Moonstone. Beau talks about the issue with First Comics News.
Dick Tracy: The plainclothes detective’s self-titled comic strip may soon go the way of Little Orphan Annie, but at least there’s a website devoted to his work. And it’s packed with goodies for Tracy fans to enjoy, including some never-before-published material by Max Allan Collins and Joe Staton. Click fast because the site is referred to as a “limited time tribute website.”

The Simpsons Attempt to Spoil Lost

NOTE: This is not an actual reveal of how the Lost finale ended last night.
Turns out Donald Trump wasn’t the only TV personality vying for our attention Sunday evening.
In hopes of keeping people tuned in for their show’s finale, the folks behind The Simpsons managed to work in a a little “spoiler” during the intro for their show. Their amusing reference to the 4.5-hour long Lost extravaganza can be seen written on the board in the image above.
This is, of course, not the first time Bart Simpson has written about another program in chalk. Back in April, the FOX series wrote words of “support” to their colleagues at South Park.

The hits just keep on coming as the comics industry starts looking like someone’s old four-color punching bag. On the heels of the cutbacks at Viz Media, now comes word that DC has shuttered their CMX imprint. And now you’re wondering, is this all just manga-specific or is it an early warning system for a greater industry-wide problem that we don’t want to talk about because…hey! Look! The new comics are here!
But that’s a question for people smarter than me to think about. I’m busy looking forward to July 22, where I’ll be at the Marriott bar in San Diego navel-gazing into my second Pale Ale. Now let’s read some fun stuff…
Brian Wood’s DMZ, Matt Bird makes the case that Hollywood should seriously consider adapting it. “We get angry when the occupied become insurgents, but we also can’t help but wonder: ‘What would I do if the war came to my town?’ That big, fat question needs to be vented on screen.”

- Romantically Challenged (ABC, 9:30): “Shawn romances Lisa’s friend Vanessa because her cable system carries the hockey championship games and his doesn’t.” She didn’t realize what type of scoring he had in mind.
- Castle (ABC, 10pm): “Beckett and Castle investigate the death of a big-name chef found frozen in a restaurant’s kitchen.” This would not be a good time to be The Naked Chef.
- Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood (Oxygen, 10pm): “Tori and Dean’s relationship is tested after uneasy rider Dean takes a spill on the motorcycle racetrack, landing him in the hospital. The accident leaves the couple conflicted—until Dean issues an apology.” The one who should apologize is the one the audience cares about the least.

The Simpsons Show Love for South Park

If you caught the opening of The Simpsons on Sunday night, you saw the network show throw a little love toward their animated cable channel brethren - courtesy of Bart Simpson’s running opening gag.
On the ever-changing school chalkboard, Bart delivered a clear message to the South Park creators, who received death threats last week following a controversial episode of the series.
The message from The Simpsons? “South Park - We’d stand beside you if we weren’t so scared.” Classic.

Clash of the Titans: American Idol Visits the Simpsons

FOX is planning some extra-special stuff for May sweeps, that wonderful season when ratings matter more than ever. The network has always booked the American Idol finale during May, but this year AI’s popularity seems to be cooling a bit. In case sharing the Glee time block isn’t enough to bring the reality series back up to its number 1 ratings spot, another FOX series will get getting an Idol tie-in.
That’s right: the regular Idol cast will be appearing on The Simpsons season finale. Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres, Kara DioGuardi, Randy Jackson and Ryan Seacrest will lend their likenesses and voice talent to the episode, which will air on May 23. Gossip says the tie-in involves bartender Moe, who will receive an invite to judge on the reality series.

Lots of cool to click on lately, from horror and comic book author Christopher Golden to comic book and television writer Gerry Conway, with a dash of The Simpsons and a blast from the Direct Market past with the ghost of Steve Milo. Check ‘em out:
Christopher Golden: When I first read Golden’s Of Saints And Shadows, I was struck by two things: (1) he’s really good and (2) this book reads like a horror version of X-Men. Novelist Ed Gorman plays Q&A with Golden over at his website.
Gerry Conway: One of my absolute favorite comic book writers (and now a TV writer in the Dick Wolf empire), Mr. Conway is excited about the new Predator reboot, Predators. He tweets: “Not that it matters: Predators seems to have a similar plot device to a movie Roy Thomas & I pitched years ago. Great minds, etc.” He expands on that in subsequent tweets, “I’m not claiming idea theft, ‘cause Roberto Rodriquez would’ve been 14-years-old when Roy & I made our pitch, and somehow I doubt…” Since he curtailed his blogging, his tweets make for fun reading.

Every once in a while, someone winds up with a little too much time on their hands—and you get to enjoy their efforts.
In this clip, 22 television theme songs are combined for a fun medley. Included are: Two and a Half Men, The Simpsons, The O.C., Naruto, Family Guy, Married with Children, Cheers, That ‘70s Show, Big Love, Freaks and Geeks, Malcolm in the Middle, The X-Files, Firefly, The Office, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Scrubs, True Blood, Charles in Charge, The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Mission Impossible and Friends.
Kudos to those who could name every tune in just two notes.

Sunday Ratings: Undercover Boss Jumps Over the Competition

CBS chose wisely when they picked their post-Super Bowl time slot winner. Outside of the sports competition on NBC, the action during the 9:00 time slot was clearly on CBS. New reality series Undercover Boss had the best viewers and demos of the night.
8pm
- The Winter Olympics (5.7/14 in 18-49) attracted 22.4 million spectators for NBC.
- The Amazing Race (2.9/7) got 9.1 million charting the course.
- Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (2.5/6) nailed down 8 million.
- The Simpsons (3.0/8) had 6.1 million laughing.
- The Cleveland Show (2.8/7) entertained 5.6 million.
